The Paris Region is one of the leading economic and scientific regions in Europe for life sciences and health. It brings together all of the players involved at all stages of the development process for diagnostic and therapeutic products, which include academic and clinical research, the hospital network (unique in Europe), large pharmaceutical and imaging companies, human health bio-imaging, bio-engineering and bio-instrumentation YICs/SMEs, research service providers (CROs), higher educational institutions (universities and schools) and health safety authorities.

Europe’s leading region in number of “pharmacy” sector companies, the Paris Region is ahead of Greater London: many large pharmaceutical groups have their Headquartersor marketing subsidiaries in the Paris Region and six of these have research laboratories: Sanofi, Servier, Ipsen, LFB (Laboratoire français du fractionnement et des biotechnologies), GlaxoSmithKline, BioRad...
It ranks second in Europe in number of “medical equipment” sector companies behind Bavaria.
The Paris Region is the leading French region for clinical studies and France ranks second in Europe in number of patients recruited if compared to the total population, behind Scandinavia (Leem, Place of France in international clinical research in 2010 survey). With 39 hospitals and 24,000 beds, Assistance Publique - Hôpitaux de Paris (AP-HP) (Paris Public Hospitals Health Service) is the leading institutional sponsor of clinical studies in France (source: AFSSAPS). 90% of specialist clinical studies companies (CROs or Contract Research Organisations) operating in France are located in the Paris Region, including the ten world leaders (MDS Pharma Services, PPD, Quintiles...).
It ranks third in Europe in number of biotechnology companies (approximately 150)after Greater London and the Berlin-Brandenburg region.

More than 40% of French Academic Research
Home to half of INSERM units (National Institute of Health and Medical Research), the institute in France entirely dedicated to biomedical research and health with almost 2,300 CNRS (French National Centre for Scientific Research) researchers and most of AEC (Atomic Energy Commission) living sciences activities, which has set up a medical imaging platform in the South of Paris that is unparalleled worldwide. Lastly, several Bioparks offer facilities for companies such as Genopole, Biocitech, Parios Biopark and Campus Cancer. |

Our sponsors The State, the Île-de-France Regional Council, the City of Paris and the Seine-Saint-Denis, Val-de-Marne, Essonne and Val d’Oise General Councils and their development agencies have supported the creation of the cluster and are actively participating in its development. They contribute almost two-thirds of the cluster’s budget and more than 40% of the funding of cooperative R&D projects that have been approved and funded between 2005 and end 2010. 80% of collaborative R&D projects approved by the cluster have received substantial funding from Europe, the State, the Paris Region, Oséo and local authorities: 97 million euros since 2005, i.e. 46% of total cost from 2005 to october 2010. Since the cluster was created, 74 collaborative R&D projects have been approved, including 51 funded by the State (Inter-ministerial Single Fund), Oseo/ISI, the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), and/or Paris Region communities. In addition, 227 projects meeting ANR project bidding criteria were approved and 110 of these were accepted and funded by ANR.* |
